Spirituality and Detachment

There is a whole compendium of spiritual teachings emphasizing the need for detachment aiming to assimilate the oneness of existence and its consequent beneficial freedom.

Obviously, there are thousands of years of profound wisdom backed up by human observations that support this teaching, and I totally agree with it.

However, I believe that this is a tough goal to accomplish because, generally, one cannot give up what one does not possess.

What do I mean by it?

It means that to give up attachment, especially the emotional-psychological ones, it is necessary to have had the sensation of those attachments.

And, in this case, I mean not only a mere flimsy feeling of it because this is inevitable so long as we live in a society, but rather a very strong sense of belonging, of being loved, of being cared for, of being an integral part of a loving and caring environment.

Sadly, many people are not fortunate enough to have had such uplifting and tender connections.

Therefore, jumping from a fragmented attachment towards a complete detachment may not be a practical decision because there will always be an unsatisfied emptiness within the individual craving to be fulfilled. And, more often than not, these people attempt to become detached out of disappointment, disenchantment, or disillusionment than from a clear understanding of its benefits, i.e., people are not pursuing spirituality, they are actually running away from their oppressors, traumas, and senses of guilt or hurt.

In other words, the pursuit of detachment aiming to free oneself from the struggles of temporariness is a profound and liberating journey so long as the person has already understood and felt the fullness of unrestricted love and compassion because then, and only then, the person will have a complete awareness of the favorable and useful reasons for detachment, which is a natural evolutionary step on the spiritual path.
